Root Canal Treatment

Root canal treatment is all about saving a tooth that's worth saving.

Drayton House Dental Practice

If the inside of a tooth becomes infected, it doesn’t always mean it has to come out. In many cases, we can remove the infection, protect the tooth and help it keep doing its job for years to come.

Helping people keep their natural teeth wherever possible is something we care about.

What is root canal treatment?

Inside every tooth is a soft tissue called the pulp, which contains nerves and blood vessels.

If bacteria reach this area through deep decay, a crack or an injury, the pulp can become infected. Root canal treatment removes the infection from inside the tooth before cleaning and sealing the root canals.

Once the tooth has healed, we may recommend restoring it with a dental crown to give it extra strength and protection.

Is it the right treatment for me?

Not every painful tooth needs root canal treatment.

We’ll carry out a thorough examination, take digital X-rays and explain exactly what’s happening before recommending anything. If root canal treatment is the best way to save your tooth, we’ll tell you why. If there’s another more appropriate option, we’ll talk you through that instead.

We think understanding your options is just as important as the treatment itself.

Why choose root canal treatment?

Keeping your own tooth is often the best outcome, which is why we'll always look at that possibility first.

Root canal treatment can:

  • Save your natural tooth.
  • Remove the source of infection.
  • Relieve dental pain.
  • Help you avoid an extraction.
  • Restore comfortable chewing and biting.
  • Support your long-term oral health.

Why choose Drayton House for root canal treatment?

Nobody books a root canal because they’re looking forward to it. Most people come to us because they’re in pain, worried about losing a tooth or simply unsure what’s happening. We’ll always take the time to explain what we’ve found, what your options are and why we’re recommending a particular treatment. If you need a moment to ask questions, we’ll answer them. If you’re feeling nervous, just let us know. We’ll work at a pace that feels comfortable for you.

Root canal treatment has changed enormously over the years, and with modern techniques and careful planning, it’s usually far more straightforward than people expect. Our job is to make sure you leave with a healthy tooth — and feeling reassured that you’ve been looked after every step of the way.

Patient journey

Step 1

Preparation

We’ll begin by making sure your tooth is completely numb, so you should feel comfortable throughout your appointment. A thin rubber sheet is used to isolate the tooth to create a clean working field for us, but it helps you relax without anything collecting in your mouth.

Step 2

Treatment

The infected tissue is carefully removed before the root canals inside the tooth are cleaned, shaped and sealed to help prevent the infection from returning. This can be a slightly lengthy appointment, and patients often enjoy listening to music or watching our TV; some even have a little nap!

Step 3

Review

If the tooth needs additional support afterwards, we’ll discuss whether a dental crown is the best long-term solution. Where a crown is required, we use our digital TRIOS scanner to create an accurate 3D scan of your teeth, making the process more comfortable and helping us achieve a precise fit.

I joined one of the care plans in Drayton House about 4 years ago and have kept it. After my visits and nice experiences, I recommended it to my friends. All of the staff there are extremely friendly. The environment and internal settings are very clean and modern. Dr Shah is professional, patient, thorough and caring. The referrals he made for us were timely and proper. The treatments he did for us were very satisfying.

Excellent dental practice. Dr Ria has been fantastic always, especially in arranging my son’s referral for treatment, and a special thank you to Julia on reception who went above and beyond to make the referral process happen quickly and smoothly. She was incredibly supportive, compassionate, and reassuring throughout, keeping me informed and making what could have been a stressful situation much easier. AMAZING TEAM. Frequently asked questions

Is root canal treatment painful?

Modern root canal treatment is carried out using effective local anaesthetic, so the procedure itself should feel comfortable – a lot of our patients fall asleep during this procedure. You may experience some mild tenderness afterwards, but this usually settles within a few days.

Will I need a crown afterwards?

Not always. However, teeth that have had root canal treatment are often weaker than they were before. A crown can provide additional strength and protection, and we’ll let you know if we think it’s the best long-term option.

Is it better to remove the tooth?

Whenever possible, we’d rather help you keep your natural tooth. Root canal treatment is often the best way of doing that, although we’ll always discuss every suitable treatment option with you.

How long does root canal treatment take?

Treatment times vary depending on the tooth and the complexity of the infection. We’ll explain how many appointments are likely to be needed before treatment begins, so you know exactly what to expect.
